Six years, one trade

I'm Dante Peterson, and I own SoCal Window Tinting. Six years hanging film — cars first, then houses, then hotels and clinics. Veteran-owned, working Los Angeles, the Valleys, the Westside and the Conejo Valley.

That poster is Tinter Battles naming me a featured competitor at the 2026 World Championships in Los Angeles, August 15–16. It will not make your living room one degree cooler. What it means is that the standard my installers are trained and held to got set pane by pane against the best in the country — and it's the same standard on a Tuesday in your kitchen.

I walk your house and scope the job myself. The install is done by installers I trained — I'm on the glass with them on the jobs that call for it, and nothing goes on your windows that I haven't signed off on. At thirty days I'm the one back looking at it with you, and I'm the number you call.

Dante competing at a flat glass station, squeegeeing film onto a large upright pane at a national tinting championship.

Station 1B, Atlanta

National championship. That's not a car door — it's a pane of flat glass, a clock, and judges who go over your edges with a loupe looking for gaps you can't see from arm's length.

Nobody's timing anybody at your house. The reason it's worth calling a shop run by a competition tinter is that the standard doesn't move when the clock comes off — and it's the standard every installer here is trained to.

Installer on a plank platform several floors up, squeegeeing film onto floor to ceiling glass overlooking the Hollywood hills.

The whole sun side of the Sheraton Universal

Every pane on the elevation that takes sun all day. Old film off, new film on, floor by floor.

Removal is the part nobody photographs. Cured film comes off a building slowly, by hand, without marking the glass underneath it — and if you get it wrong on a hotel at Universal City, everyone staying there watches you get it wrong.

Your great room is not the hard part.

The three problems glass has

You didn't buy the windows for the heat

Big glass is the best thing about a Southern California house and the most expensive thing to live with. Film fixes the three things it does wrong without touching the one thing it does right.

Heat & glare

The room off the west wall becomes unusable from three o'clock on and your AC runs to cover it. Film rejects the infrared before it gets inside, so the room evens out and the system stops fighting.

Up to 80% total solar energy rejected (manufacturer rating)

Fade protection

Hardwood, rugs, art, leather, cabinetry. The sun takes them slowly enough that you don't notice until you move a chair. Film blocks essentially all the UV doing it.

99% UV rejection

Privacy

Street-facing rooms, neighbors twelve feet away, ground-floor bedrooms. Daytime privacy from outside, full view from inside. Frosted and gradient options where you want it around the clock.

Real glass, real numbers

Real jobs, real glass. Where a job lists a number, it's the manufacturer's published rating for the film installed — measured in a lab on clear glass, not on that house. Your windows will read differently, which is why we check your glass before we quote.

Where we work

Where we install window film

We install residential window film from the coast to the far end of the Santa Clarita Valley. What changes town to town isn't really the sun — it's the glass someone put in front of it, and whether the marine layer shows up to take the edge off in the morning.

West · South

Northridge

Valley heat with nothing in the way of it. Ranch homes with wall-length aluminum sliders that were cheap in 1972 and are a furnace now. The room off the patio is the one nobody sits in after three.

West · South

Granada Hills

Same sun, bigger houses, more of them on a grade. Two-story glass up near the foothills takes the afternoon straight on with no shade coming to save it.

West · South

La Cañada Flintridge

Foothill customs with hardwood, rugs and art worth more than the windows they're sitting under. Here the fade conversation usually comes before the heat one.

West · South

Pasadena

Craftsman and Spanish revival with the original single-pane wood still in it. You're not replacing those windows, and in the landmark districts you couldn't anyway. Film goes on the inside, changes nothing from the street, and comes back off if you ever want it gone.

South · West

Santa Clarita Valley

Valencia is master-planned tracts with two-story glass and no mature trees yet — great rooms that stack heat at the ceiling and never let it go. Canyon Country sits further east with older stock, more ranch homes, and hills that throw the heat back at you until dark.

West · Hills

Calabasas

Hillside glass bought for the view, which means the film isn't allowed to touch the view. Low reflectivity only — nothing that reads as tint from the driveway.

Westside

Westwood

Towers and mid-century homes packed in tight around the campus. High-floor glass with nothing shading it and west-facing units looking straight down the 405 corridor. Film goes on the interior, so the building looks identical from the street and the HOA has nothing to object to.

Westside

Brentwood

Canyon lots and rebuilds with walls of south-facing glass over hardwood, rugs and art. The heat is real, but the call usually starts with something that used to be darker than it is now.

Coast

Santa Monica

The marine layer buys you a morning and then quits. Afternoon sun comes off the water with glare on top of the heat, and the last thing you want is a film that trades the ocean view for a few degrees.

Westside

Beverly Hills

Traditional and hard-modern on the same block, and facades you're not allowed to alter. Interior film changes nothing anyone sees from the curb and comes back off if the next owner wants it gone.

Coast

Malibu

PCH and canyon houses built around floor-to-ceiling ocean glass. Nothing stands between the house and the water, which is the whole point and also the problem — all-day glare, full UV, and salt working on everything.

Inland

Simi Valley

Far enough inland that the coast never helps. Tract two-stories with west-facing great rooms that load heat all afternoon and hold it well past sundown.

Conejo

Agoura Hills

Hillside lots with oaks that shade you until about noon and then step aside. Two-story glass over the 101 takes the rest of the day head on.

Conejo

Thousand Oaks

Master-planned neighborhoods with big south and west elevations. Newer dual pane keeps the draft out and still lets the room cook — dual pane slows heat transfer, it doesn't stop the sun coming through the glass.

Orange County

Huntington Beach

Coastal, and the sun still wins. Sliders pointed at the water, sand throwing light back up at the glass, and fade running on everything inside all summer.

All aspects

Los Angeles

Mid-century single pane in the hills, new construction on the flats. The common thread is glass specified for a view and never once for August.

The film · XPEL, Johnson & ASWF

The film matches the house

We're an authorized XPEL dealer, and we also run two other American manufacturers — Johnson Window Films, family-owned in Carson since 1973, and ASWF out of Las Vegas. Almost everything that goes on a house here is dual reflective: it carries its reflectivity on the outside where it's doing the work, and stays quiet on the inside. That's the difference between a window you can still see out of after dark and a mirror of your own living room.

Manufacturer-published ratings, film on single-pane clear glass (Johnson tests on 1/8", ASWF on 1/4"). Yours will shift with the glass you already have — single pane and dual pane behave differently, which is why we check your glass before we quote.

XPEL film is quoted on request — ask for it by name at the estimate and we'll check your glass against it. The films above are metallized: the metal layer does the heat work, which is why they don't go purple the way cheap all-dye film does. Johnson says ScenicView is guaranteed not to fade or change color and carries a scratch-resistant hardcoat. Warranty is the manufacturer's and depends on the install: Johnson residential interior installs carry a lifetime limited warranty for the original purchaser; commercial interior is 10–12 years and exterior-mounted film 2–5 years. ASWF terms vary by film. You get the written warranty for your film with your invoice.

How it goes

Three visits, and one of them is short

Installer squeegeeing film onto a sliding glass door while standing on a drop cloth laid over the floor.

The drop cloth goes down first

Film is a wet trade. Slip solution runs off the glass and onto whatever's underneath it, which is why the cloth is down before the film is up and the floor is dry before we leave.

We cut on site, we mask what needs masking, and we haul our own trash. You shouldn't be able to tell we were there except through the window.

Step 01 — 30 min

Free estimate

Free. We go window to window: orientation, glass type, what's actually bothering you. You get a written price that doesn't move later.

Step 02 — 1 day

Install

Most homes are a single day. We mask, we cut on site, we clean up. Nothing gets left in your driveway.

Step 03 — 30 days

Cure & check

Film hazes slightly while moisture leaves, then clears. We come back and look at it with you. Manufacturer warranty on the film — lifetime limited on residential interior installs.

Commercial

We also do buildings

A hotel elevation at Universal City. A medical clinic. Retail entries. Same film, same meter, taller ladder.

Film by the case

Commercial glass is the same physics and a completely different job. Access, after-hours windows, occupancy, and a building full of people who need the doors to keep working while you're standing on them.

If you manage a property instead of live in one, it starts the same way it does for a homeowner: tell us which glass is causing the problem and we'll come look at it.

Common questions

What people ask before they book

Will window tint make my house dark?

Not the way automotive tint does. Residential film is specified by visible light transmission — a 35% film still lets a third of the light through and reads as a faint grey cast from inside. The films we hang most on homes are dual reflective: they carry the reflectivity outside where it works and stay quiet on the inside, so you're looking out a window after dark instead of at a mirror of your own living room.

Does window film actually block heat, or just glare?

Both, and they're separate numbers. Glare is about visible light. Heat is total solar energy rejected, which counts infrared and UV as well — the films on this page are manufacturer-rated from 56% to 80% rejected on clear glass. Glare is what you notice in the first hour. The heat number is what changes the thermostat.

Is residential window tinting legal in California?

Yes. California's tint law governs vehicles, not houses — there's no state limit on how dark you can go on residential glass. What can apply is an HOA rule or a historic district restriction on exterior appearance, and since film is installed on the interior surface, it generally doesn't change what the building looks like from the street. If you're in a landmark district or under CC&Rs, check your specific rules before ordering.

Will film crack my dual pane windows or void the warranty?

Thermal stress is a real consideration, not a myth, and it's the reason we meter and identify your glass before quoting instead of after. Manufacturers publish glass compatibility charts for every film, and we match to them. Some window manufacturers do limit or void their seal warranty when aftermarket film is applied — if your windows are still under warranty, tell us at the walkthrough and we'll work around it.

How long does residential window film last?

Sputtered metal film on a home holds up for well over a decade in Southern California sun. Dye-based film is what goes purple and bubbles after a few summers, and it isn't in our van. Johnson residential interior installs carry a lifetime limited manufacturer warranty for the original purchaser; commercial and exterior installs carry shorter terms, and we tell you which applies before you buy.

How long does the install take?

Most homes are a single day. The free estimate comes first — we go window to window and give you a written number that doesn't move later. Film hazes slightly while moisture leaves the adhesive, clears over a few weeks, and we come back at thirty days and look at it with you.

What does home window tinting cost?

It's priced by the square foot of glass and the film you pick, so the only honest number is one taken at your house. Two things move it more than anything else: how much of your glass is above reach, and whether old film has to come off first. Removal is slow work and it gets quoted separately.

Do you carry XPEL?

We're an authorized XPEL dealer, and we also run Johnson Window Films out of Carson and ASWF out of Las Vegas. If you want XPEL specifically, ask for it by name at the estimate and we'll check your glass against it.
